5 Tips for Marketing Your Mobile App, Increasing Downloads

From apps that tell you when your parking meter is up to apps that track menstrual cycles, the saying “there’s an app for that” has never rung more true. But with thousands of applications for consumers to choose from, it can be a difficult task getting yours the exposure it deserves. The following tips will help you market your mobile app to increase the number of downloads and users.

Be innovative. Nothing gets more buzz than people sharing the “coolest application ever” with their friends. Creating a unique app that offers something no one else does will make you stand out in the App Store. How does one go about developing an innovative app? If you can confidently say that your app doesn’t yet exist in the App Store, you’ve hit the jackpot. Take advantage of a smartphone’s existing features such as the GPS and camera for ultimate functionality.

Build relationships with bloggers and podcasters. If you’ve followed tip #1, you’re well on your way to getting free media exposure. Review blogs and tech centric podcasts love innovative apps, and with the rise of such platforms hitting its peak, it’s a good idea to target bloggers and podcasters. Once you’re on one blog or podcast, other bloggers and podcasters are sure to want a piece of the action.

Use social media. With millions of users, Twitter is a social media site that can make your app a huge success. Word of mouth is a great way to give your app some exposure, and Twitter is the perfect platform to get the job done. If you’ve already made your app as unique as possible, you’re on the right track. People will tweet about it just for the fact that it’s so innovative. To make your app tweetable, make sure your copy is informative yet interesting. Also, don’t shy away from promoted tweets and sponsored stories on Facebook. The money spent on these paid promotions will be worth every penny.

Tell your fan base. If you’re about to launch a new app, get your existing fan base excited. Make a ‘Coming Soon’ page on your website, include the app in your newsletters, and connect on your social media pages. Getting people hyped about your new app will make the big launch attractive.

Market through your website. Your app and website go hand in hand, so make sure your website is thorough yet simple. Your website is a great place to show how your app works in action. Make it clear how users will benefit from your app.

If you have a unique app idea and want to receive maximum exposure, follow the tips above. Make your messaging clear and interesting and you’re sure to gain new users for your mobile application.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Android phone (preview)

Samsung has officially unveiled its hotly-anticipated Galaxy S4 Android phone at an event in New York City. The Galaxy S4 retains a similar look and feel to its predecessor but includes a 4.99in full HD display, comes with a 13-megapixel camera and features a number of Samsung-exclusive software features.

Samsung appears to have designed the Galaxy S4 in line with its existing Android smartphones, particularly the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II. The Galaxy S4 has a similar polycarbonate construction with removable back cover, though the company claims it has used a new moulding technology to design the case.

At 7.7mm thick and weighing 130g, the Galaxy S4 compares favourably to most other flagship smartphones on the market. Samsung describes the phone as "slimmer, lighter and more solid" than the Galaxy S III. It measures 136.6mm long and is 68mm wide.

While the Galaxy S4 looks similar to its predecessor there are a few distinctive touches that set it apart. The pattern etched into the glossy plastic that adorns the front and back is new, as is the brushed aluminium-style finish on the sides. The latter appears to be the most significant design change. The Galaxy S4 will be available in 'black mist' and 'white frost' colour variants.

The Galaxy S4 retains a similar look and feel to its predecessor, the Galaxy S III.

Perhaps the biggest hardware upgrade is the display. The Galaxy S4 has a 4.99in, Super AMOLED screen with a full HD 1080p resolution of 1920x1080, an increase on the Galaxy S III's 4.8in screen with 720p resolution. The pixel density of 441 ppi is also among the highest on the market and the screen will work when used with gloves, a feature we've already seen on Nokia's Lumia 920.

The Galaxy S4 is powered by a 1.8GHz Samsung Exynos 5410 Octa processor and has 2GB of RAM. The 16GB of internal memory will be expandable by a microSD card slot located behind the rear battery cover, though 32GB and 64GB models will be available in certain markets. A 2600mAh battery is also a significant upgrade from the Galaxy S III's 2100mAh battery.

There will be multiple variants of the Galaxy S4 depending on market but the Australian model will be 4G LTE compatible. It will support the fastest download speeds available, up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

The Galaxy S4 has a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, an upgrade from the Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel snapper. The most significant camera upgrades are all software related, however. 'Dual Shot' allows users to take a photo with the front and rear cameras simultaneously using selected templates, 'Drama Shot' takes 100 shots in four seconds and 'Cinema Photo' is similar to Nokia's Cinemagram feature picking one part of the photo to move while the others stay still — somewhat like an animated GIF.

The Galaxy S 4 is 7.7mm thick and weighs 130g.

There's also "Sound & Shot' which takes a picture and captures up to nine seconds of audio, and 'Story Album' which groups photos together somewhat like a timeline. Finally, an 'Eraser' mode takes a series of pictures, allowing you to remove unwanted people or objects in the background.

Software features dominated the launch of the Galaxy S4 and that's no surprise considering the hardware is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The Galaxy S4 runs the latest version of Android, 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and comes skinned with Samsung's latest TouchWiz UI overlay.

New TouchWiz features include 'Smart Scroll', which allows users to scroll up and down with eye movement, 'Smart Pause', which will pause video when the user looks away from the screen, 'Air Gesture' which allows you to swipe through photos or scroll without touching the phone, and 'Air View, which enables users to hover their finger over the screen to preview selected information on the phone, such as a video thumbnail, a calendar entry, or a photo gallery.

Samsung's head of mobile communications, JK Shin, with the Galaxy S4.

There's also an S Translator app that can translate nine different languages using both text to speech and speech to text, 'Group Play' which can send music photos and documents to multiple devices and an 'S Health' app which aims to replace fitness tracking accessories like Fitbit. A built in pedometer will track your steps and the Galaxy S4 also includes temperature and humidity sensors. Samsung will sell an optional accessory called the S Band that syncs via Bluetooth to the Galaxy S4 when you're not carrying your phone with you (such as when you're playing sport, for example).

Samsung hasn't announced specific Australian details for the Galaxy S4 just let, but the phone will be available through 327 mobile operators in 155 countries and will launch on all major Australian mobile networks including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile.

Fastest Smartphone Ever Launches Thursday, It’s Not the Galaxy S4

A phone that is being dubbed the “Fastest Smartphone Ever” will be launching this Thursday, March 14th. However, it won’t be the Samsung Galaxy S4, a device that will also be launching on March 14th. Instead, it will be XOLO that will be announcing a new Intel-powered smartphone that will evidently be the fastest smartphone ever in Goa, India on Thursday.

Most eyes will be on the Radio City Music Hall in New York City where Samsung will be hosting an Unpacked event on March 14th. The company is widely believed to be announcing the new Samsung Galaxy S4, a device that has been rumored since 2012 and will be replacing the Samsung Galaxy S3, a device that has sold over 40 million units worldwide.
And while a majority of consumers will likely have their eyes on that event, another company hopes to steal some of the Galaxy S4′s thunder next week on March 14th.

XOLO has sent out media invites, according to Tech2, for an event in Goa, India to show off a new Intel smartphone that it’s calling the “Fastest Smartphone Ever.” The company does not specify what the invite is for but the company’s homepage is teasing something called Mission ‘X’, complete with a countdown to the launch event.

The company also says that the “speed barrier is all set to be shattered. Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for Mission X. 4 days to take off.”

It appears that the device will run a speedy Intel processor, potentially Intel’s new Clover Trail+ processor, which the company showed off at Mobile World Congress 2013. Other specifications of the device remain unknown.

What is known is that XOLO’s launch will be going up against Samsung’s event for the Galaxy S4. And with a tag line like “Faster Smartphone Ever”, the company may be able to divert at least a little bit of attention away from the Galaxy S4.

XOLO is an Indian company and it’s unknown if it’s device will be headed to markets outside of India. The Galaxy S4 on the other hand will almost certainly be launching in hundreds of regions around the world.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to boast a 4.99-inch to 5-inch full HD 1080 display, quad-core processor, 13MP camera, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and new Samsung-made software features that look to be additions to Samsung’s other smart features which arrived with the Galaxy S3.

Obama urged to defend ‘jailbreaking’ of smart phones
The White House will soon have to dial in a response to a petition asking that mobile phone users be allowed to switch locked devices to new carriers, a process known as “jailbreaking.”

An obscure official’s decision that the “jailbreaking” of phones violates US copyright law has generated a flurry of protests from civil liberties and digital rights activists.

A petition submitted to the White House generated more than 100,000 signatures as of Thursday, passing the threshold for a required response from the administration of President Barack Obama.

The issue arose from a ruling by the Librarian of Congress stating that those who circumvent the software protecting a mobile phone locked to a single carrier would no longer be exempt from copyright law as of January 26.

The decision could affect the widespread practice of “jailbreaking,” or freeing a device sold by one carrier to be used on another, or while travelling overseas.

As a result, said the petition submitted to the White House website, “consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice, and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full.”

“We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal,” the petition states.

Mitch Stoltz of the Electronic Frontier Foundation said the issue remains complex, and that while it does not make people who unlock phones criminals, it opens the door to potential lawsuits.

“While we don’t expect mass lawsuits anytime soon, the threat still looms,” he said in a blog posting.
“More likely, wireless carriers, or even federal prosecutors, will be emboldened to sue not individuals, but rather businesses that unlock and resell phones.”

Stoltz said the law, known as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, should be updated to fix the problem.

“The law was supposed to protect creative works, but it’s often been misused by electronics makers to block competition and kill markets for used goods,” he said.

“And no creative work is involved here: Wireless carriers aren’t worried about ‘piracy’ of the software on their phones, they’re worried about people reselling subsidized phones at a profit.”

Cell phones still a ‘no’ in the classroom

There is no doubt technology is becoming a big part of everyday life all over the country, especially on college campuses. Keene State College students are part of this change.

Wireless is now available in all KSC classrooms, according to Communication Professor Chitra Akkoor. “They think it’s enabling learning and I personally don’t think that’s the case because I don’t think all faculty are there yet,” Akkoor said. Akkoor explained the wireless availability has a big impact on cellphone use in the classroom. She believes this has just helped students find another way to become distracted. According to Safety Studies Professor Jaime Ingalls, every teacher can decide upon their own cellphone policy.

“An educator’s classroom environment is sacred to them,” Ingalls explained. She said every teacher needs to make it clear to the students what the policy is because each classroom is different. She said she believes every teacher reacts differently to cell phone. “I try to use humor to bring out the point that it’s distracting behavior,” Ingalls explained.

She says how she does not want to single students out directly.

Physical Education Professor Donna Smyth said she asks her students to respect each other when discussing cellphones in the classroom “I will pull students aside privately if it becomes an ongoing problem,” Smyth said.

According to Akkoor, it depends on the situation but she will usually bring attention to cellphones being used in class.

“All students are adults, so I respect that and I don’t like to insult anyone directly so I just say it in a very general way.”

She explained that she will allow students to leave the class to use their phone if it’s an emergency. Some students say they don’t use their cellphone in class that often because they don’t want all the attention on them.

KSC sophomore Sarah Pohar said students do not like it when the professor confronts them in the middle of class.

“It’s embarrassing and no one likes that,” Pohar stated.

She said she would prefer the teacher waited until after class to confront the student.

KSC sophomore Madisyn Ponn said she thinks professors give quizzes more often to ensure students are paying attention.

“I don’t want to think it affects my learning but it probably does,” Ponn said. Students who don’t use their cellphones in class sometimes feel cheated according to Erik Hensel, KSC sophomore.

“It doesn’t matter what the teachers says, it’s on the student to be self-motivated. If people want to check [their cellphones], they are going to,” Hensel said.

He continued and said there is nothing the teacher can do to stop students using their cellphones.

Not every professor would agree with Hensel. Ingalls said some of the blame can be placed among the professors too. “Part of it is our fault as the instructor … we’re not engaging you,” Ingalls explained. She said every teacher needs to capture the attention of their students in order for them to pay attention. Ponn said she doesn’t believe her cellphone use is affecting other students.

“Unless it’s making noise I don’t think it affects other students.” Pohar agreed and said she thinks laptops are more distracting than cellphones. Pohar and Ponn both said they are guilty of using their cellphones in class regularly. “It’s hard to put the phone down,” Ponn said. Smyth said students don’t do it to purposely to disrespect the teacher.

Smyth said,“They don’t mean any harm or disrespect. It’s just part of their culture and who they are.”

To Make Your Phone Work While Studying Abroad

Something many students may not realize until right before they leave to study abroad, or worse, once they’ve landed in another country, is that their free unlock cell phones are limited to the U.S. and won’t work the same way abroad.

First it is important to understand the difference between GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and CDMA (Code division multiple access) phones. GSM is the most globally accepted network for phones, with CDMA offering less coverage. As a general rule of thumb, most phones that use sim cards are GSM (like AT&T phones) while most phones that don’t use sim cards are CDMA (like most Verizon and Sprint phones).

With new LTE technology, some Verizon phones do have sims, meaning the device can work outside of the States. For instance, the new iPhone 5 comes with a Micro LTE sim card.

If you have At&t, T-Mobile or any other carrier that uses a sim card, you need to have your unlock that mobile to use it abroad. All you have to do is call the carrier and they can unlock the device for you; but be forewarned, they will often give you a hard time. Carriers hate it when you unlock your device because it means it’s not locked to their system anymore, and you can take your phone—and your money—to anyone else. The key to persuading the disgruntled customer service representative is to make it very clear you need your phone unlocked because you are traveling outside of the country. They will likely try to sell you on their international plan but it is very, very expensive and, in most cases, unnecessary. In the end, it is a service they have, so you can demand they unlock your device. If all else fails, there are great Internet tutorials on how to unlock your phone yourself, or you could always pay a shady character on craigslist to do it for you (caution advised—beware of installation of malware).

After your device has been unlocked, you’re a free agent! Once you land at your destination, go to a local cell phone shop and buy a local sim card and plan. Just like we have “go-phones” or “thow-away-phones” in the States that offer daily or month-to-month no-contract service, so do other countries.

Now you have two options: get a new phone number for the time you are abroad, or keep your old phone number. The second is a bit trickier.

To get a new number, just set up your phone and new sim card with the sim carrier your chose. Instructions should be on the packaging and, if not, the cell phone associates in the store can help you.

To keep your old phone number, you need to do a hardware swap. A hardware swap is when your number is transferred from one sim card to another. Doing this will cancel your current contract with your carrier, as you would be terminating your service with them in favor of the new carrier. If you are in contract, that means you will have to pay a fee (usually around $200) to leave them. It also means if you have a retired plan, such as AT&T’s Unlimited Data, you will lose it; when you get added back onto your plan, you can’t get those retired features back.

For most people, it is better to get a new number while abroad. Keeping your number only works well when you are out of contract with your carrier and don’t have any retired features on your account. In the case that you do decide to keep your number, the cell phone associates in the store can perform the hardware swap for you.

Some mobile phone unlock cannot be taken abroad at all—they simply aren’t designed to get service outside of the U.S. If you call your carrier, they will offer to send you a temporary phone that you can go abroad with you. You will be subject to the huge international fees, though. If it is impossible to take your phone abroad, it is much better to buy a local no-contract phone and plan from the country you visit. The no-sim CDMA phones fall into to this category.

By getting a local cell phone plan, you will save yourself hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in international fees.

HTC One is an Amazing Phone With Some Pretty Ridiculous Superlatives

HTC One is an Amazing Phone With Some Pretty Ridiculous Superlatives

Let’s get one thing straight first; the new HTC One sounds like an awesome phone. Its got a 4.7 inch 1080p display, a high quality sleek design and is one of the first smartphones to include the quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, which clocks in at 1.7 GHz. In non-tech-speak, the One is top of the line.

But what is drawing the most attention from today’s announcement is the phone’s camera, which includes HTC’s self-coined “UltraPixel” technology, and Zoe, a photo and video social media tool. But what’s drawing the most attention from today’s announcement is the phone’s camera, which includes HTC’s newly created UltraPixel technology, and Zoe, a photo and video social media tool that sounds a lot like Vine.

Whenever you hear about the newest iPhone or Android, one of the big marketing points is always the number of megapixels, which is a basic number used to determine the resolution and clarity of a photo. HTC is arguing that megapixels aren’t the only thing that counts. While the One carries a 4 megapixel camera (half the megapixels that the iPhone packs), the phone does come equipped with the above-mentioned UltraPixels, which absorb more than 300 times the light of a megapixel, which means that the One is the clear favorite in low light environments.

As HTC CEO Peter Chou argues though, difference in megapixels is not the defining mark of a camera.

“The megapixel myth is the wrong way to go, so what really matters is to give you much better image quality with great innovative, exciting experience. So that’s where we’re focusing on,” Mr. Chou said to Engadget.

The other camera highlight at the HTC One’s reveal was Zoe, a photo creation and sharing app which lets users create photos using three-second videos. Sound familiar? The similarities to already released apps Vine and Echograph are just another sign that the GIF-video market is already mainstream.

What did we learn from today’s news? That at this point, smartphone cameras have progressed to the point that rebranding efforts often do more good than the actual technology. So forgive us for thinking that Zoe sounds like a wannabe Siri, and UltraPixels just sounds made up. HTC, you may want to get some new PR guys, cause these aren’t really working.

Unlock a Code for Sony Ericsson Mobile

Many Sony Ericsson cell phone models come locked to network providers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile or US Cellular. Having a phone locked to a particular network means that you cannot use it with another carrier simply by inserting another SIM card. To switch to another carrier, you will have to purchase an unlock code for your SE mobile. Unlock codes can conveniently be purchased from phone unlocking websites.

Instructions

1

Type "*#06#" on your SE phone's keypad. As soon as you enter this code, a 15-digit number will arrive on the screen. This is the phone's IMEI number. Make sure you write down the number.
2

Visit a website that provides unlock codes for SE smart phone, such as Unlocking, GSM Liberty or The Travel Insider. (See Resources.) On these websites, you will have to provide details such as the specific phone model, network carrier, IMEI number, your name and email ID. After you enter this information and wish to proceed, you will be required to pay. The fee varies depending on the network the phone is locked to and the model of your phone.
3

Keep checking your email periodically. The website should send you the code through email within 24 hours.
4

Unlock the phone using the code. Typically, the website instructs you on how to insert the code. Basically, you have to power on the phone using a SIM card other than the one the phone is locked to.

The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is a small, rectangular card that every GSM cell phone uses for holding the subscriber's personal information and phone settings. It is typically found behind the battery on most of the sony ericsson unlocked phones. To change the SIM card, first take the battery out and slip the SIM card out of its compartment. You can then reverse the process to insert another SIM.

After changing the SIM card, wait for a few seconds until the phone screen asks for a password/unlock code. When you see the message, enter the code obtained from the website.

To Fix a Wet Cell Phone

Just when you thought the impossible wouldn't happen, it did! You dropped your mobile phones in water! Think all hope is lost when it comes to saving your cell phone? Wrong, depending on the amount of water damage and the time the phone was submerged you may be able to save it. Dropping it in a source of clean fresh water provides the least possibilities that it is permanently damaged. Pool water and sea water increase the possibility that you will need a new phone because of chlorine and salt.

1
Remove the cell phone from water. Time is of the essence when it comes to saving and fixing a submerged cell phone, as soon as you see your phone in water, remove it quickly!
2

Take the battery out of the phone as soon as you take it out of the water. Doing this reduces the damage done to your battery by staying in the wet compartment.
3

Shake your unlock mobile phone to get all the water out and reach for the paper towels. Press down on your cell phone to make sure all the excess water has come out. If you have accessories such as cell phone covers, take them off promptly otherwise water will still be stuck in your phone.
4

Saving your information by removing the SIM card immediately. The damage done to the relatively small SIM card is minimized by reducing the time in contact with water. The SIM card is located below the battery in most cell phones which use cards.
5

Remove excess moisture by covering your phone with either desiccant gel packs or rice. Desiccant gel packs can sometimes be found when purchasing brand new shoes or clothes. Make sure your cell phone is completely covered with either one of these for at least 8 hours.
6

Use a wet-vacuum hose placed 4 inches away from your mobile phones unlocking to remove additional water. While this won't remove all the water, it will certainly eliminate the big spots of water. Do not use a regular vacuum, use one designed for water.
7

Wait at least a day or two before powering on your cell phone to see if it works. Even if the phone itself doesn't work, the battery, SIM card and other accessories may still work.

Unlocked Cell Phone

Flashing and unlocking are two terms commonly heard when discussing cell phones and carriers. Many people think they are the same thing but, in fact, flashing and unlocking refer to two different processes for two different technologies, but they both offer the same result.
Technologies

Two different major technologies in the world exist for cell phones: CDMA and GSM. The vast majority of the world uses GSM, which uses a SIM card that is locked. Carriers that use CDMA have their information stored directly in the phone programming, with no external SIM card. The United States uses about 50 percent CDMA and 50 percent GSM.
Unlocking

Unlocking is used with GSM technology and allows you to take your phone with you to a different GSM network. Entering an unlock pass code into the phone permits you to put a different carrier's SIM card in the slot.
Flashing

Since CDMA phones do not use SIM cards, you "flash" the firmware with the new carrier's information. You must have a cable to connect your phone to a computer and use flashing software. Many people take their phones to a professional CDMA flasher in order to change carriers using CDMA technology.
History

In 2006, the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) legalized computer programs designed to make you able to take your smart phone with you when you switch carriers. Prior to that, you could not keep your same phone if you wanted to go to a different network.
Considerations

You cannot use a GSM phone with CDMA carriers or CDMA phones with GSM carriers, even if they are unlocked or flashed.

Many young people -- and some older ones, too -- are choosing to forgo traditional landline telephone service, using their mobile phone as their only phone.

For families, though, there's certainly something to be said for a hom phone -- a phone number tied to a place rather than a person, a central contact point for whichever combination of family members happens to be home at the time.

In an era of tight budgets, families who want to keep that home phone may have to look at alternative ways of doing so.

I recently got several AT&T products to review, and the one that left me scratching my head was the Wireless Home Phone Base. At first, I was confused about what it actually did. But it turns out it's a way of providing one of those alternate channels for home telephone service.

Basically, the wireless home phone base is a way of getting your home phone service through AT&T's wireless network instead of through a traditional landline. You use the base with your existing home telephones. It will work with your answering machine, too, but it comes with cell phone-style voice mail service if you'd rather use that instead. Verizon sells a similar product, Verizon Home Phone Connect.

Once the base unit has been activated, you unplug your telephone and your answering machine from the wall and plug them into the base instead. You cancel your landline service and -- assuming you don't want to change telephone numbers -- you have your old landline smart phone number transferred to your new wireless account. Instead of being assigned to a traditional mobile phone, your new account is assigned to the wireless home phone base. Once you connect your household phones to the base station, your conversations are carried by the mobile phone network instead of by a landline. As with your cell phone, you do have to dial the area code with every call, but otherwise your phone operates just as it did when it was hooked up to a landline.

My first question was, why would someone want to do this? I always think of cell phone plans as being more expensive than land-line service, but that's not necessarily the case here. AT&T charges only $19.99 per month for a Wireless Home Phone Base connection with unlimited nationwide calling, a price which is competitive with other forms of home phone service. The price can be even less than that -- $9.99 per month -- if you add the wireless home phone base to an existing family cell phone plan. Verizon also offers plans as low as $9.99 per month for its comparable service. Either company will throw in the base for free if you sign a contract for monthly service.

You can take the home base with you when you travel. A "snowbird" family that spends part of the year down south and part of the year up north could take the box with them and use the same phone number year-round. That could be a boon to horse-owning families that relocate to Middle Tennessee for the summer show season.

There are some caveats.

Just like a mobile phone, the base unit only works in areas where the company selling you the base (AT&T or Verizon) offers mobile phone service. I suspect the strength of that signal, and the placement of the base station within your house, may have an impact on call quality. You don't have to worry about whether the signal is 3G or 4G, however, since you won't be using it for data.

The home phone service you get by using the base is voice-only. It isn't compatible with gadgets that send or receive data through your phone line -- fax machines, some types of home security systems, dial-up modems, some types of DVR, and so on. If you use those gadgets regularly, you still need a traditional landline and the wireless home phone base is not for you. Before cutting the cord, make sure you aren't using your landline for anything other than voice service.

If you rely on your landline cell phone connection for AT&T's DSL Internet access, and you try to cancel your voice telephone service, you may have to restructure your DSL account in order to use your landline just for DSL, without voice service. That could change the price of your DSL plan and cancel out some of the savings you'd get by switching to the wireless home phone base.

If you make a 9-1-1 call, the cell phone will attempt to route it to the correct county's communications center, just as it would with a cell phone. Verizon's base unit even has a GPS function built in to assist with this process (the base unit may need to be near a window in order to access GPS). But, unlike a landline connection, this isn't an exact science, especially if you happen to live within reach of cell phone towers from more than one jurisdiction. In an emergency, you may need to confirm that you're speaking with the proper com center for your address.

You have to know what you're getting into, but for some families seeking to keep their home phone while reducing their costs a wireless home phone base may be worth a look.

Consequently, a person can change the phone Sim Card as long as the new one belongs to the same network. However, there are ways to unlock most Nokia phones so that they will work with other phone networks, and you can do it online for free.

Instructions
1

Unlock your nokia mobilephone on the NokiaFREE website. According to the product's website, the NokiaFREE calculators will allow you to "repair, remove sim restrictions and unlock Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Maxon, NEC, Sony, Panasonic, Vitel, AEG / Telital, Alcatel cellphones." To unlock your Nokia phone, just go to the NokiaFREE website and click on your phone model, enter your phone's information, and then click on "Get Nokia DCT... Unlock Codes!." You will get a list of codes for you to try on your phone.
2

Unlock your Nokia phone with GSMLiberty. This website works similarly to the NokiaFREE website.
How to Swap Cell Phones

Your old cell phone doesn't have all the features you need and you want to upgrade. You found the phone you would like to buy on the Internet, but want to know how you can switch mobile phones easily. Switching phones isn't quite as easy as changing shoes, but it isn't that difficult either. You need to make sure that the phone you buy is compatible with your cell phone provider, and that it has all the features you need.

Instructions

Swapping Cell Phones
1

Determine your needs. Do you do a lot of texting? If so, a good keyboard is a must. Will you be using your phone for Internet use? That also will make a difference in the type of phone you choose. Do you want to use the phone mainly for talking without heavy Internet use or texting? If so, choosing a phone that is designed for heavy texting and Internet is overkill.
2

Research the type of phones that are consistent with your current cell phone provider, if you choose to continue with your current provider. Swapping phones doesn't necessarily mean swapping providers. Check the site of your phone provider to see if trading in your phone is of benefit to you economically.
3

Upload your phone book list on your old cell phone using the "Systems" tool for backing up your list remotely, before making the switch. This will save you time, and you won't have to manually enter your old list into your new phone. Not all phones necessarily have this feature, but many do.
4

Call the customer service center of your cell phone provider after you purchase your phone. They will ask for your cell phone number and the code on the back of the battery pack of your new phone. With that number, they will redirect your phone service to your new phone. They will then make a test call to make sure that your connection is good. Have a land phone at your disposal so you can stay on the other line while they make the new connection.

All computers and mobile devices such as unlock iphone 4 connect to the Internet using an Internet protocol (IP) address. This unique code identifies your system and allows packets to be routed to and from your iPhone. Typically an IP address is assigned to a system such as an iPhone dynamically. It may be necessary to force your iPhone to change its assigned IP address. Perhaps you are experiencing trouble with your Internet connectivity, or you may wish to disguise the fact that you are repeatedly connecting to a remote site.
Other People Are Reading
Instructions

3G Connection
1

Disable Wi-Fi connectivity on your iPhone to ensure that you are connecting to the Internet over a mobile data connection. The factory unlock iphone will always prioritize Wi-Fi traffic higher than 3G or Edge network traffic. Open the Settings app and select the Wi-Fi menu to find the toggle switch that allows you to disable Wi-Fi on your iPhone.
2

Ensure that you have data connectivity by looking at the very top of your iPhone display for "3G" or "EDGE." You can verify this by opening the mobile Safari app and attempting to connect to a website.
3

Connect using the mobile Safari app on your iPhone to a website that reports back your external IP address. One such resource is offered by Tech Den.
4

Make a note of the IP address that is reported back to you.
5

Enable Airplane Mode on your iPhone and then turn it back off. You can do this under the Settings app on your iPhone. Airplane Mode is the very topmost menu item under "Settings."
6

Connect to the same website as earlier using Safari on your iPhone. Compare the addresses. If they are different, you have successfully changed your IP. If they are the same, you may need to enable Airplane Mode on your iPhone and leave it on for a few minutes before turning it off.

Wi-Fi Connection
7

Connect with the Safari app on your iPhone to a website that reports your external IP address, for example Tech Den.
8

Go into the Settings app on your iPhone and then select the Wi-Fi menu. Press the blue arrow to the far right of the network name to which your are currently connected. The network to which you are connected will display a check mark next to it.
9

Make a note of the IP Address reported under the Dynamic Host Connection Protocol (DHCP) tab for your current network.
10

Turn off Wi-Fi on your iPhone using the toggle button within your Settings app and then turn it back on. This will force you to disconnect and reconnect to the Wi-Fi DHCP server.
11

Check your IP Address under the DHCP tab of your Wi-Fi network within the Wi-Fi Settings on your iPhone. If it is different, you have forced a new IP address.
12

Check your external IP address using the website you used earlier. Your internal DHCP address can change but you may still see the same external IP address. This is because many Wi-Fi networks use Network Address Translation, or NAT, to hide a network of systems behind a single Internet address.
13

Turn off Wi-Fi on your wireless cell phone and connect to the Internet using your mobile data plan. This will ensure that you are connecting with a different IP address. However, in some cases, you may not be able to connect to a mobile data network or may wish to preserve your data usage.
14

Connect to the Internet using a different Wi-Fi network. If you are unable to connect with a mobile data network and you have been unable to change your external IP address due to NAT issues, the only way to change your iPhone's IP address on the Internet is to connect using a different Wi-Fi network. Go to a coffee shop or friend's house and use that Wi-Fi.

Consumers may need to obtain cellular phone records for a number of reasons, including tracking incoming and outgoing calls and to trace data and texting expenses. Cell phone companies keep records of your calls and bills for several months, if not years. So, whether you need a recent or an older record, your cell phone company is likely to have the information you need. The company will not likely give records to anyone other than the account holder or anyone authorized by the account holder. There are a few ways to obtain your cellular phone records from your mobile provider. You can obtain an electronic copy of the bill to download and/or print, or you can get a paper copy.

Instructions

1

Log on to your online mobilephone account. Create an online bill account if you do not have one already. You will have to verify that you are the account holder by inputting information related to the account such as the account number and possibly provide other personal information. This protects the security and integrity of your mobile phone account.
2

Download the bills that you need by specifying the date range for which you want to see records. An option labeled something like "See my bill" or "Download bill" is available as an account option.

Now think of this: You have someone, perhaps your husband or wife, or child who gets home earlier than you thought they would and they need to get in the house, but the keys are with you. Or this: your mother, best friend, or someone close to you unexpectedly comes to your house for a visit but meets your absence, how would you want to let them in?

Up till now, the above scenarios would mean the persons would have to wait till you arrive if the only set of keys were with you. However, with new developments in technology your mobile phones will be all what you need to put that person out of their waiting game by unlocking the door from wherever you are in the world.

This is possible through a keyless entry device called Lockitron that works basically with Android and iPhone smartphones. Lockitron is a keyless entry device that attaches to a door’s deadbolt.
There’s more still to come

Five years of hard work came to fruition when Nokia announced the Nokia 808 PureView at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona back in February of last year. The 41-megapixel shooter took the entire industry by surprise and raised the bar for what kind of photos you’re able to capture with a mobilephone. “It was like a mythical moment,” Juha tells us. “We had these special covers that masked the device from prying eyes, and we were finally able to take them off and show it to the world.”

PureView: the best imaging available

2012 also brought us the head-turning and award-winning Nokia Lumia 920, which applies PureView to solve perhaps the biggest challenge in photography: capturing good photos in low light conditions, such as at night or in a dimly lit room. “Consumers are amazed by the results they’re seeing from Nokia Lumia 920 in these conditions, and we have so many ideas for how to improve in this area”, says Juha.

So what is PureView, and where is it heading in the New Year? “Well, I think it’s important to underscore that PureView doesn’t mean any specific technology,” says Juha. “It’s the latest and greatest in imaging. When you buy a wireless mobile phone with PureView, you are getting our highest quality imaging innovation.”

It’s basically about problem solving, Juha explains. “Nokia 808 PureView solved the problem of zooming and sharpness, and for Nokia Lumia 920, it was low light.

Looking ahead, Juha says there are plenty of challenges to overcome. “Imaging is extremely subjective, and you can always make something better.” Pressed for more details, he just smiles at us but does throw us a little bone: “We’re really driving innovation in key areas to deepen and enrich the imaging experience. I can’t tell you about the specific things we’re working on. Safe to say it’s very cool.” Oh, well. At least we tried.

Make the complicated simple
We steer the conversation in a new direction and ask about the work involved in creating the next breakthrough in imaging.

“We’re looking at imaging holistically, from optics to display, and working on all of those to improve. It’s very complicated, and the trick is to make all these building blocks work well together,” says Juha. “But it’s not just purely hardware innovation. You need to get the software to work as well. That’s the real beauty — that’s what makes a truly amazing solution.”

Juha tells us that the hardware and software teams sit together and crank out some really amazing stuff. “I’m really proud, we have a damn good team. Hardware doesn’t work without very good software, and there’s no software that can fix bad hardware.”

Asked if there’s one major problem he would like to solve in the years ahead, Juha takes his time before answering. “I’d love to make it super easy to get great photos every single time,” he tells us. “You should be able to give your free unlock cell phones to a 3-year old and still capture amazing photos, like with a big DSLR camera.

Creative and social go hand in hand

When you’re head of imaging technologies at Nokia, what gets you really excited? Juha pulls out his Nokia Lumia 920 and starts showing off the Cinemagraph app. “It’s a real eye-opener. It blurs the line between photography and videography,” he says.

“You can do a lot of really cool things with Cinemagraph. It might just be a small part of the image that’s moving, something really subtle, but the effect can be truly mind-blowing.”

There’s also the whole social side of imaging. People mostly used to take pictures and print them on paper, and today, we’re sharing our photos on Facebook, and you’ll get comments from your friends. “I’d like to evolve that interaction,” Juha says. “Share new content in new ways.”

And then there’s the technology and how it’s evolving. “People are working on exciting technologies that can capture so much more. Huge innovations are happening right now,” says Juha. “We’re looking at imaging from so many different angles.”

To Find Cheap Cell Phones

While the convenience of a mobile phone is priceless, the phone itself can definitely take cash out of your wallet. Your cellphone provider can provide you with a cheap cellphone when you renew your contract or provide you with a credit that knocks down the cost of the phone. But what if you break your phone and don't have replacement insurance? Fortunately, there are several ways to find cheap, reliable cellphones.
Instructions

1

Check if your cellphone upgrade is available. Usually cellphone providers will allow you to get a two-year price on a mobilephone every two years. Sometimes they'll offer you discounts and coupons around the time of your renewal to keep you from switching to a different provider.
2

Check online auction sites such as eBay or marketplaces like Amazon for used cellphones. Check the seller's user ratings, however, and make sure they don't have negative reviews. Make sure other buyers haven't flagged them for selling outdated or shoddy cellphones.
3

Purchase a refurbished wireless mobile phone. Refurbished phones are always cheaper than new phones. These models usually are guaranteed and warrantied by the manufacturer like they are new phones. Refurbished phones are phones that have been repaired by the manufacturer and then resold. You can find these on cellphone providers' websites and on other online retailers such as Overstock or Amazon.

Unlock Your Cell Phone

Cell phones have become engrained in the lifestyles of the current generations because they offer a wealth of helpful resources. The mobile phones user base is extremely large and continuing to grow at a record pace. With consumer dependence on cell phones at an all-time high, many households are looking for ways to acquire these devices at a reasonable price.

There is a wide range of mobile carriers that compete for the business of the mobile phone consumer market. These large corporations make the majority of their money off data plans and roaming charges, but also seek out agreements with the actual phone makers. Popular electronics manufacturers offer multiple unlocked cell phones to select carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon .

One of the biggest dilemmas for consumers in the mobile phone industry is when they are hoping to purchase a newly released phone and it is not available with their current service provider. Service provider contracts can be lengthy and it is often not worth exiting the agreement for a new wireless mobile phone. There can be severe penalties for terminating contractual obligations with a mobile carrier, so many consumers shy away from the dispute and are forced

to purchase a phone that they are not entirely happy with. This conflict of interest has led to the emergence of unlocked cell phones as a way to circumvent the strict carrier laws.

Unlocked phones are mobile phones that are only able to be utilized for a specific carrier. For example, the Apple iPhone debuted as an exclusive AT&T capable phone in its early years. Those without AT&T began purchasing unlocked iPhones on the secondary market so that they could be used on their current mobile plan.

Unlocked phones are beneficial to users because they allow them to keep their current data plan, their phone number and the terms outlined in their contract. The transition from one phone to the next is most often orchestrated by switching the SIM card. SIM cards contain valuable data like personal contacts as well.

The next time your current mobile service provider tries to prevent you from buying a certain phone for a special someone or just as a personal gift, take a look at the unlocked phone market. Unlocked phones are also usually less expensive than buying direct from the carrier and come with all the same supplies. There is no compromising on functionality as all features are preserved in an unlock cell phones for free. The only detail to consider is the type of apps you prefer. Android apps and iPhone apps are built on an entirely different code base so they are unable to work on phones that are not meant to run the applications. Once you are committed to an operating system, it is much easier to make a decision on which type of unlocked mobile device will work best for your needs.

The Relationship Of Cell phones and Children

However, mobile phones can be used in inappropriate and hurtful ways. Parents need to be aware of the issues surrounding bullying through the use of cell phones and sexting. As long as your child is carrying around their cell phone, others have access to them. If your child is being bullied, the bully can text them at all hours of the day and night. The bully can share the phone number and your child can receive text messages from people that they can't identify. This can make your child feel even more vulnerable. Many teens do not report being bullied through their cell phones for fear of their parents taking the phone away.

Sexting is a newer phenomenon that some children are experimenting with during their adolescent years. Your child needs to understand that any picture and anything they text to someone else can be distributed quickly to anyone that other person decides to send it to. The end result can be devastating to a young person. Perform a search of the Internet to learn more about the sexting slang/acronyms that are being used in text messages.

Limits for safe and responsible unlock phone online use need to be established up front. A cell phone contract is one way to establish your rules and expectations.

Your child needs to know that the cell phone is not theirs, but a privilege that you are providing to them. Your child needs to know that you have the right and responsibility to review their cell phone usage such as text messages and browser usage. Nothing should be guaranteed to be private. Inform your child that if you find a pattern of deleted material on their phone you will assume that it was inappropriate in some way.

Other things to consider should be setting limits on when the mobilephone should be turned off, such as at meal times and during the night. Take the phone to a parent supervised area to be charged at night. This discourages your child from sneaking phone use when they should be sleeping.

Many service providers and phones come with tools or have available apps for parental control. Unfortunately, our children can sometimes work around those. If your child puts a password on the phone and won't give it to you, you can still take the phone away. If you Google "How to unlock a password protected phone" you will find YouTube videos showing you how to do this. We would like to thank the 9 year old that posted his video of how to unlock a password protected iPhone. It allowed Dawn to get back into an old phone whose password she had long forgotten!

How to Communicate Better on the Phone

Instructions
1

Write down the person’s name and phone number on a sheet of paper. Also write down all that you want to ask the person on the mobilephone. Think about the answers that you need and that will bring about the questions that you need to ask.
2

Relax by taking a deep breath before making the call. Some people get nervous talking on the phone. Make sure this nervousness doesn’t come through in the call. People can be so uncaring when it comes to people who are not confident. They look as them as someone who can’t cause trouble and that won’t make any difference.
3

Be precise. Make your questions as to the point as possible. Don’t beat around the bush. Most people on the phone are being reviewed not only by quality but by quantity as well. They get upset when someone takes so long getting to the point.
4

Take notes. This is very important. You don’t want to waste time making a second phone call to ask the same thing you asked before. Write it down and get as much information as you can. If you don’t understand something, speak up and ask the person on the unlocking cell phone to clarify.
5

Speak without mumbling. Open your mouth and make sure you are using your lips, teeth, and tongue correctly when speaking. A good book to read that you should be able to get at your local library is “The Art of Speaking Made Simple” by William R. Gondin and Edward W. Mammen. It actually gives diagrams to show you how to display your tongue, teeth and lips.
6

Be upbeat and polite. Always be polite when speaking and have a positive tone. Allow the tone in your voice to reflect polite, respectful, kind, and cheerful. It makes it easier for the other person on the phone to communicate with you.
7

Listen carefully and allow the person to speak. Limit your interruptions. Sometimes you'll need to interrupt but it usually is very rude to do so. There will be time to speak when the person is done speaking. If you do not want to forget something that you were going to respond with, then write it down as you are listening to the individual on the phone. He or she may answer your question without you having to ask it if you just listen carefully.

There are several components to mobile phones plans that vary from provider to provider, including data-usage plans and talk-time packages. Carefully compare plans that best suit your individual or family needs.

Most people touch hundreds or thousands of surfaces throughout the course of the day. Few of us wash our hands after touching them. The germs and bacteria from our hands are easily transferred to a cell phone. The heat generated from the operation of a cell phone creates a perfect environment for the growth of this bacteria. Every time you use your unlock mobile phone, you place your mouth and nose in close proximity to this breeding ground, increasing the likelihood of infection and illness.

Instructions

1

Turn the cell phone off.
2

Spray or lightly dampen a soft, clean, lint-free cloth with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol or a specially made sanitizing spray made for disinfecting electronics. Instead, use the cloth with the disinfectant on it to wipe the buttons, sides, front and back of your mobile phones. Use Q-tips to gently clean around the buttons and ports of the device.
4

Buff the screen.
How We Use Cell Phones Today

By understanding consumers’ mobile cell phone usage today, you can create new types of content to engage with them where they are spending their time. Here are few stats to consider:

82% of cell phone users take pictures with their mobile devices.

Photos are a great way to show off your business and build your brand. But, having your loyal customers show off your brand for you can be even more significant to your business. A couple of big brands that you can look at for inspiration are Southwest Airlines and Starbucks, which each use sites like Instagram and Pinterest to share pictures taken by loyal customers. It’s simple to ask your happy customers to snap a few pictures of themselves with your products or showing the great results of your service, then share on social sites by tagging you or creating a hashtag they can add to the description so you can find them and re-share them on places like your social profiles and website.

56% of cell phone users access the Internet on a unlock mobile phone.

More consumers are using mobile devices to access the Web, especially as Smartphone ownership grows. And because they expect to get information quickly via mobile, you should optimize your Web presence so that they can find you while they are on the go. For example, create a mobile-friendly website or landing page so that consumers can clearly identify what you have to offer. Also, make sure your information on local listings, like Google+ Local, is accurate and up to date so that consumers searching for you online can easily find you and contact you.

31% of cell phone owners search for health information via mobile phones.

Within two years, the number of mobile users searching for healthcare information has grown from 17% to 31%. This demonstrates how important it is for you to have fresh, mobile-friendly, and relative content for your business. For instance, any type of health clinic could publish educational content about illnesses, treatment plans, and new studies within your industry to build credibility and awareness for their brand. This concept applies for whatever industry you are in; for example, a home improvement business could publish information about the importance of weatherproofing for the winter months or about how the new windows you are selling save energy and money. A school could share content about new teaching methods and models and how they benefit students. No matter what type of business you run, there is relatable content that users are searching for, especially on mobile devices.

Cellular Phone

The ability to communicate is important in today's mobile society. One communication option is a cellular phone. Having a cellular phone, also known as cell phone, offers you different features. Some features include storage capabilities, a camera and its small size. These, and others, are some reasons why a cell phone is good to have. Before you buy one, you should decide how you will use it so you can make a good investment.
For Safety

Having a cell phone can help in emergency situations. You may not have access to a landline telephone or another person's cell phone. Types of emergencies can range from tornadoes to car breakdowns to hurricanes. If you want a cell phone only for emergencies, purchasing a pre-paid mobile phones would be the way to go.

Replace Landline Telephone

You can use a cell phone as a replacement for a landline phone. This option can save you money. Before you explore this option, though, compare how much you can save when you switch landline-phone usage to cell-phone usage. Choose a cell-phone plan that matches your needs and budget.
For Business

A cell phone can have personal or business uses. This allows you to leave your office. You will not miss telephone calls. Having a business cell phone means you will be able to contact your clients, vendors or suppliers. Make a list of features for your business cell phone. One feature to have is decent sound quality, so you don't miss anything the person, on the other end of the call, says.

For Legal Evidence

The use of unlock a mobile phone records and pictures can help with legal cases, such as a car accident. If you have a cell phone with a built-in camera and have an accident, you can snap a photo of the car damage. The photograph and police accident report can provide legal evidence.

For Music

When you spend time traveling to work or school, you can listen to your music. Some cell phones use a media center that gives you a way to download songs. Check how many songs you can have stored on your phone.

For Text Messaging

A good reason to have a cell phone involves sending text messages. Text messages act as short descriptions typed into your phone. You can send these messages when you are in a noisy environment, such as a nightclub. Find out if your cell-phone plan charges a different rate for texts as opposed to telephone calls.

How to Choose a Blackberry Cell Phone

Deciding on a new Blackberry device can be both an exciting experience and also a tough choice. In order to determine which phone is best for you, there are a few necessary steps to take. This will ensure you are happy with your purchase and that your mobilephone provides what you are looking for. Follow these and you will be well on your way to enjoying your Blackberry!

1.Make a list of the most important functions that you are looking for in your Blackberry mobile. For example, you may want a full qwerty keyboard, expandable memory, a flip style phone, or a GPS capable handset. Also, make note of anything you do not like about certain blackberry's and any price considerations if applicable.

2.Go to the website of the cell phone provider that you have or that you plan on signing up for. For example, if you have T-Mobile service visit their website at www.T-mobile.com.

3.Find the section on their website that lists the phones that are compatible with their service. Each carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon...) carries their own line ups of not only blackberry handsets but other cell phones as well. You need to narrow your search down to the ones that are available for your particular service.

4.Make your decision based on your list of wants and needs. You may even want to compare and contrast two or three of your options online for reviews and ratings.

5.Once you have your new device, you should personalize it to fit your lifestyle and needs.

IBM: Computers to have sense of smell, taste in five years

sim free smartphones have a come a long way in the last few years, and technology has really propelled our dependence on these devices. We have the power to navigate roads through them, perform speech-assisted searches online, even pull weather data from locations around the world in matter of seconds. However, according to IBM, these smart devices and computing in general will be able to perform tasks and functions that will truly astonish you in the coming five years.

In its annual prediction on breakthroughs in digital trends, IBM says that the era of cognitive computing will truly unlock a mobile phone when computing devices will be able to see, smell, taste, touch and hear – digitally, of course – in the very near future. How soon exactly? In the next five years, claims IBM in its 5 in 5 report, which talks about innovations that will change our lives in the next five years.

Advancements in cognitive computing is set to turn science fiction into science fact, given what’s cooking over at IBM’s research labs. Here’s a sneak preview on what to expect on your digital devices very soon:

1) A sense of smell
Thanks to cognitive computing, “Tiny sensors that ‘smell’ can be integrated into cell phones and other mobile devices, feeding information contained on the biomarkers to a computer system that can analyze the data,” according to IBM Research’s Dr. Hendrik F. Hamann.

This will help enable smart devices detect you’re getting a cold long before you do.

2) Digital taste buds
Dr. Lav Varshney, research scientist at IBM, predicts that a careful mix of inductive reasoning added with creativity will help enable cognitive systems in the next five years to indulge our taste buds.

“Computers will be able to construct never-before-heard-of recipes to delight palates – even those with health or dietary constraints – using foods’ molecular structure,” he claims.

3) Touch through the screen
Imagine the sensation of being able to touch through your mobilephone’s screen to get a feel of a gadget before purchasing it online on a ecommerce website? It will distinguish fabrics, textures, and weaves so that you can feel a sweater, jacket, or upholstery – right through the screen, claims IBM’s researchers.

The secret behind this cognitive computing advancement, says IBM, is to understand and translate vibrations – that which we feel when we touch some object.

4) Intelligent sight
Our ability to see and sight (by itself) is a complex process, hitherto impossible to replicate on a computer system with a traditional programming approach. Currently, a computer looks at an image or video, it needs supporting meta tags to further understand its setting and relevance.

“But by taking a cognitive approach, and showing a computer thousands of examples of a particular scene, the computer can start to detect patterns that matter, whether it’s in a scanned photograph uploaded to the web, or some video footage taken with a camera phone,” IBM’s John Smith, senior manager, Intelligent Information Management.

Where to Get the Most Cash for Your Old iPhone

Ready to upgrade to iPhone 5, but wondering whether you can get a few bucks for your still-functioning unlock iphone 4 or 4S? PM goes in search of the best places to sell a used smartphone online.

A:I have an iPhone 4, but now I want to get the new model. I've heard that I can sell the old one online and recoup some of the cost. Where do I get the best deal?

B:Every time the latest version of a smartphone or tablet arrives, a new market for the previous models arrives too. Some buyers hope they can get decent used smartphones for less money than brand-new ones, and others think the latest version is too small an upgrade to justify the higher price. If you strategize well, you can sell your old phone on this secondary market for a surprising amount of cash. But before you can sell it, you have to get it ready for its new owner by backing it up, erasing your data, and restoring the factory settings. To boost the phone's resale value, you might also consider using Ultrasn0w (a program available on iphone-dev.org) to unlock it so that it can work on different carriers. Unlocking is legal but won't work on all phones—Verizon and Sprint devices, which operate on the CDMA network, can't be unlocked to work on AT&T and T-Mobile's GSM networks and vice versa. Finally, box up the mobile phone unlock in whatever original packaging you have left so it looks as close to new as possible.

Some electronics stores, among them Apple and RadioShack, have trade-in programs, and many websites serve as go-betweens for you and potential buyers. For gadgets such as the iPhone that cause near mayhem when new models come out, you need not look any further than Craigslist, where a few sentences including the state of your phone, your asking price, and any extra features—an intact warranty, for instance—will be enough to flood your inbox with emails from interested (and nearby) buyers. As of this writing, a 16 GB black AT&T iPhone 4 could fetch about $150.

Electronics more than one or two generations older than the current version are tougher sells, but it's certainly not impossible. Amazon, Best Buy, and Gazelle all have programs that let you trade your gadgets in exchange for gift certificates. You rate the condition of your phone—perfect, good, or mediocre—then send it in for the service to verify your judgment and to receive a gift card. With Amazon's exchange service, if the mobile cell phone is worth more than what you guessed, you'll get a gift certificate for the higher amount, and if you overestimated, Amazon gives you the option of taking the lower amount or not selling at all. Though all three programs are nearly identical in process, they aren't in results: At press time, Amazon offers the most for a 16 GB black AT&T iPhone 4—a "like new" phone will get you $170 and a "good" one goes for $145. Best Buy offers slightly lower amounts—$152 for "perfect" and $145 for "good." Gazelle is the cheapskate of the group, offering just $145 for a "flawless" phone and $140 for a "good" one. Prices are bound to fluctuate as new models arrive, so it's still important to check all your options before choosing one.

The same services will work for much more than iPhones. If you have something really old, though, you might be better off giving eBay a shot. There, an obsolete-technology collector may be just the match for your old Walkman.

How to Protect Cell Phones from Water

Water damage can cause a lot of problems for your mobile phones. If you drop your cell phone in a cup of soda or a bathtub, you want to try and dry it out immediately. Remove the back cover and take the battery and SIM card out of the phone. If it is a flip phone, keep it flipped open. It is likely that your cell phone will turn on and start functioning regularly once it is completely dry. This doesn't mean you can be careless when your cell phone is around water. Practice the utmost caution for water protection and you may never need to buy a new phone again.
Instructions

1.Keep your cell phone out of the bathroom. Unless you're in the middle of a call, there is really no reason to bring your mobilephone into the bathroom. This is where a lot of water damage can occur to your phone. Countless people have left their cell phone on the edge of the tub or sink and watched it drop into a puddle of water.

2.Keep your phone in your pants pocket when going to the pool, lake or ocean for a swim. You don't have to bring your phone with you right to the edge of the pool when you're going for a dip. It is likely that you will be able to hear your phone ring from inside your pants pocket. If you don't think you will, go to your phone's call settings and increase the volume of your ringtone. If you're on a boat, try to put your cell phone in a purse or case to protect it from the water.

3.Prepare for rainy days. It is highly unlikely that a rain storm will damage your cell phone, but if you keep it out in the nasty weather long enough, it will. When you need to talk in the middle of a rainstorm, try to get some sort of cover over your phone. An umbrella will work best, but if you don't have one, a book, newspaper, magazine or even your other hand will work fine.

4.Take your cell phone out of your pocket when you go to sleep. The last thing you want to do is throw a pair of jeans into the washer machine only to find out that your unlocking cell phone is in the front pocket. A wash cycle will do major damage to your phone. It's always good to check your clothes thoroughly before you throw them into the wash. It's also a good idea to know where your phone is at all times.

5.Buy a waterproof phone case. These plastic cases will fit to the size of your specific phone and will offer full water protection. You will be able to text and talk while the cover is on and many are designed to float if dropped in water. If you plan to be on a canoe or kayak for an entire day, this is probably your best bet in ensuring your phone will stay dry.

Young Entrepreneur Changes the U.S. Cell Phone Market

He was appalled at the barriers the U.S. unlocking cell phone industry threw in front of consumers at every turn. Restrictive two-year contracts?

Indecipherable pricing schemes for voice, data and text? And, once he got a prepaid phone, $50 a week just to call his family back in Pakistan? This, from the most technologically advanced country in the world?

"I couldn't believe it," Khattak says.

In 2007, he went to London for an internship and discovered how to change the game--at the airport, no less, only moments after he got off the plane. "I realized that it was as easy as going to a vending machine, buying a SIM card and [thereafter] paying $22 a month for your phone bill," he says.

It was his "eureka" moment: unlocking cell phone, setting them free. "I decided that I had to change the way people in the U.S. go about their plans and phones," he says. His New Haven, Conn.-based company, GSM Nation, had sales of $35 million in 2011, its first full year, and is on track to reach sales of $50 million this year.

Three components to Khattak's life help explain how he came to build his business. First, he was exceptionally competitive at squash, good enough to be recruited by Yale.

"I am ethnically a Pashtun, and Pashtuns have dominated squash for over half a century. I went on to become a top-10-ranked junior national," he says.

The Pakistan Squash Federation is run by the Air Force, the second major influence in Khattak's upbringing. He was a military brat--his father was in the Air Force--so he lived the gypsy life of moving frequently and with little notice, more than 15 times, to cities as big as Karachi and to tiny, remote villages.

The third component was his can-do personality. "I have always loved building stuff and fixing it; [I am] a problem solver. I tend to look at everything to see where the stress points are and how to fix them," he says. "I would fix my schoolmates' and neighbors' computers and PlayStations. All this was leading to a bigger venture for me."

The chance to study engineering at Yale, his ability to fit into any environment and his tinkerer's bent laid the groundwork for him to tackle the multibillion U.S. cell phone industry.

A Business is Born

GSM Nation's model is simple: Consumers buy manufacturer-unlocked phones that can be used with any network, then they sign up for significantly cheaper voice, text and data plans through third-party carriers such as H2O Wireless or Simple Mobile--with no multiyear contracts.

These carriers resell blocks of minutes they've purchased from T-Mobile and AT&T.

Seed capital for the company first came in the form of a $30,000 loan pooled from friends and family; later it would come from Junaid Shams, who co-founded GSM Nation with Khattak. At the time Shams was in medical school at George Washington University (he graduated in May). "In early 2010, Ahmed came to me with this raw business idea," Shams says. "We spent the entire night developing it, talking about infrastructure, financing and concept, basically trying to figure out if it was feasible or not."

Raising capital was the first test. Once the company had revenue, Khattak and Shams raised an additional $120,000 in loans. A year after launch, capital arrived from an unlikely angel investor: Khattak's dentist. Needing a root canal (but with no way to pay for it) Khattak searched locally for an endodontist who would do the work on credit. When he ran across the name Moin Ahmed, he thought, Sounds like he's from my part of the world. Sure enough, Ahmed was a fellow Pakistani, and he told Khattak not to worry about the money.

As GSM Nation stirred to life, Ahmed mentioned that he was seeking a place to park some private capital; Khattak suggested he write a check against equity in the company. Bang: Khattak landed $200,000.Ahmed Khattak of GSM Nation.

Did the endodontist see the growth potential in GSM Nation from the start? "Not at the time," he says, "but I wanted to help Ahmed in his venture." Believing in the man more than in the business itself, he handed Khattak the check.

With desperately needed capital in hand, Khattak ramped up inventory, and two friends from Yale joined the company. Still, Khattak ran the show.

"I am a very independent person, so I really don't like a lot of interference. I didn't seek a lot of help at all," he says. Indirect help came from the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute, which gave him a tiny office space and required him to produce quarterly reports. "It instilled a great deal of confidence in me, and I owe them for that," he says.

GSM Nation was an instant hit. "It's hard to put a finger on a particular occasion when I thought we were going to be successful," Khattak says, "because we have surpassed our wildest imaginations. I mean, think of it, in excess of $50 million in sales in just over two years. We have taken such huge leaps that every six months we have a new aim and we literally treat that as our starting point."

He estimates the total market for his industry is $2 billion to $3 billion--but growing fast. "Fifty to 70 percent of T-Mobile activations came from contract-free plans in the past year, and now all carriers are going into this segment," he says. This translates into more sales for the likes of GSM Nation.

Full Boil

Soaring growth poses the immediate problem of cash flow. On this point, Khattak and Shams agree. "I think the biggest mistake we made in the early going was not having as much funding as we originally thought we needed," Shams says. "We were growing so fast [in] the first six to 12 months, faster than what even we had expected, that we didn't have the funding at the time necessary to allow us to grow at the same pace."

Many of GSM Nation's wholesale clients are based in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. So after a long day at the office, Khattak returns home, and calls begin coming in from the other side of the globe. With Khattak clocking 20-hour days, GSM Nation sidestepped major crises in its first year. Ever the problem-solver, Khattak admits he was constantly putting out smaller fires.

The greater challenge is that there are practically no barriers to entry in the unlocked cell phone market, so the company must continually raise its game. "[It makes] the landscape insanely competitive; we started a company that was essentially a repository of information for people, and then if they wanted a device they could buy one," Khattak says. "It might sound stupid, but our philosophy is to make sure the person who calls wants and needs what he thinks he does … We are not the cheapest in the industry, but we are the best. A lot of our competitors try to compete on pricing, and they never get anywhere."

GSM Nation certainly has its fans: A scan of reviews on ResellerRatings.com turns up myriad gushing comments (e.g., "You guys need a Superman cape.").

Yet cash flow remains the biggest obstacle to growth. "If I had a few million [dollars] more, I would do $200 million in sales this year," Khattak says.

Meanwhile, operations are lean at the New Haven headquarters. With just 14 employees, the company relies heavily on contractors. The work environment is casual, with "no sense of hierarchy." As for his management style, Khattak says, "I am the kind of person [employees] respect and don't want to disappoint because of my love for them, as opposed to them being scared of me."

Family Man

Was Khattak ever frightened of failure? "Absolutely--still am. The fears are different, though. In the beginning, it was more along the lines of, I would have to go back to Pakistan having failed at something, and my friends and family wouldn't understand," he says. Today his fears are of disappointing customers. The fire dance of cash flow to keep product moving means that GSM Nation operates on a precipice.

So far, Khattak has managed this dance. And it hasn't distracted him from the pleasures of starting a business. "It's incredible coming to work every day and seeing what you have done," he says. "I am obsessed with growing my company to thousands of people ... the fact that I can get the thing I desire and [share] it with my friends and family is a good perk."

On a Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, the fog has burned off, and it's a gorgeous summer day. Khattak has flown in early for meetings. He speaks rapid-fire, his brain clearly buffering half a dozen ideas that simply can't make it into words fast enough. Despite the demands of GSM Nation, he is already at work on his next venture, eDrop.com, a new way of social shopping for great bargains. "I have assembled an amazing team," he says. "We are going to release our first beta in [September] and hopefully go into a nice round of funding by October."

Khattak checks, then pockets, his iPhone and bids goodbye. He is taking a meeting at the airport, then flying back to Connecticut the very same day he flew in. Why? In spite of the insane hours he commits to his work, he reserves one day a week to spend with his wife and son to enjoy the fruits of his American dream.

Marty Jerome is a former columnist for The Boston Globe. He lives in San Francisco.

Storming the Gates

When a twentysomething vaults into an industry with no experience, no contacts, very little capital and meager working knowledge about American business, you have to ask, How did he make this magic? Here's what other entrepreneurs can learn from the success of GSM Nation's Ahmed Khattak.

Do your homework. "It's fine to get into uncharted territories, but once you get in, do your research," Khattak says. "Too many entrepreneurs spend too much time doing risk analysis [before they take action]."

Find paying customers ASAP. James Boyle, managing director of the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute, where GSM Nation was born, emphasizes the practical: "One of the pieces of advice we give students is to focus on finding the first paying customer as soon as possible. Whether you're familiar with an industry or not, the process of getting someone to pay you money teaches you a great deal about challenges and opportunities in that space."

Future of mobile: How Nokia shows what's really important - and it's not apps

Smartphone hardware continues to become more and more similar, with minor, iterative improvements being added as time progresses.

Whatever your mobile phones is nowadays, if it's a smartphone, it will have the staples of Wi-Fi, mobile data (3G/4G), Bluetooth, a camera, and an app store where, regardless of what platform you're on, the top apps will be pretty similar. However, where manufacturers continue to expend more and more effort in order to differentiate themselves is through the mobile features and services they offer.

For example, if you saw the articles I wrote about the good and bad elements of the Nokia Lumia 920, you'll know that I spend most of the time while I'm out and about using Nokia's Mix Radio feature. Similarly, for the 'out and about' part of that sentence, I use Nokia Maps, Transport and Drive, and despite my reservations about some of the public transport routes suggested, they're all excellent apps and have quickly become my preferred mapping service.

Unexpectedly, for me, it's not the hardware or the apps that matter, but those services.

Now, fast forward a few years to when ample bandwidth means you're no longer tied to a specific handset, and you could see a very different smartphone ecosystem developing - one where you don't necessarily have to be a handset maker to be a big unlocked phones store in mobile.

Nokia's services play

This is interesting for players like Nokia. Unlike almost all of its rivals in the smartphone space, Nokia doesn't have a platform of its own to support in the long-term: it's using Windows Phone for the foreseeable future, leaving OS development and updates in Microsoft's hands.

On the plus side, Nokia has worked hard to get the services on its handsets up to scratch, and as a result now has market-leading apps for mapping, free music and has arguably some of the best imaging software in a phone in the form of the PureView system.

Maps is one of Nokia's most interesting services to look at. The company has a long history with mapping and in 2011, it introduced 3D modelling. Since then it's continued to develop the services, adding public transport and driving navigation to a growing list of features, which also includes offline access.

Most recently, Nokia's mapping services were rebranded as Here, bringing the introduction of an HTML5 web-based version of the maps, accessible via an unlock i phone 4 or iPad. This has been its smartest move for a while, and one that could be a precursor to appealing to a wider market and deriving more money from what is currently a key asset.

Carolina Milanesi, a mobile analyst at Gartner, agrees that Nokia is making the right moves in the services business.

"Maps or now 'Here' certainly has a bigger opportunity to draw money for Nokia outside of their own devices," Milanesi told me. "The multi-platform approach, now supporting iOS and Android and working with companies like Amazon, proves that Nokia has bigger plans for its location and commerce business."

Can services add enough value for Nokia?

While its achievements with mapping are no small feat, the company isn't being fiercely protective of the service. Instead, it's allowing rivals to offer a slightly cut-down version of its maps software on their own devices, indicating that the company can see the value in mapping far beyond that on its own handsets.

It's done a similar thing with its cameras too, adding Nokia-specific features and image processing software to create a range-topping, if not class-leading, camera experience on smartphones. However, unlike its mapping moves, Nokia hasn't made a sound about allowing other manufacturers to include its image processing engine or other photo-trickery, but that doesn't mean that it won't one day.

Putting a figure on the value added to a Nokia handset by the inclusion of its maps, imaging or camera software is hard, but it's the stuff that is keeping Nokia releveant to the market right now.

Nonetheless, even with Nokia's solid moves in services, it's not a segment that's making the company any money.

In its last financial quarterly statement, Nokia's Location and Commerce units posted a total loss of €56m, which is a less than stellar performance. Even so, and in the face of a year-on-year decline in revenue for the unit, Nokia's fortunes here are actually improving, albeit slowly.

Despite the slow progress, Nokia clearly believes in the value of having plenty of fingers in plenty of pies. Since 2009 alone, it has acquired Bit-side, Cellity, Plum, Dopplr, MetaCarta, Novarra, Motally and Smarterphone, all of which are service-based companies.

This move to services is almost as applicable to RIM, than Nokia, after all, in RIM's most recent financial quarterly figures, nearly 40 percent of its revenue came from services and software. However, with the trajectory that the two companies are on, the outcomes are potentially very different - Nokia has the potential to 'go big or go home' in the consumer space and RIM has the potential to dominate a niche market.

"As an asset [Nokia's] location and commerce platform is more relevant to where the market is going than RIM's back end," Milanesi said.

Even with Nokia's strides to differentiate its products from competitors by delivering unique services or features, its future without hardware wouldn't be easy. It will need to continue to developing its non-core activities massively if it wants to secure itself a future in the mobile market, with or without handsets.

Getting Your iPhone 4 Unlocked by an iPhone 4 Unlock Service

When you buy your iPhone 4 from AT & T they will issue your phone after locking it with the SIM card that they give you. Due to this reason, you will not be able to use your phone with another SIM under any circumstances. Where ever you go it is a must for you to get the service from them. However, Apple also offers factory iPhone unlock by making unlocked phones available for you. In addition to that there is the possibility for you to find an iPhone 4 unlock service in order to get your mobile phone unlocked. When you have an unlocked phone you enjoy very much more freedom than using a locked one.

If you have an iPhone 4 it is a good idea to go to a website of a company that offers iPhone 4 unlock service and get your smart phone unlocked in order to enjoy full freedom. This is only necessary if yours is an iPhone 4 that is not subjected to factory iPhone unlock facility. If it is an already unlocked one you never need to worry. Getting your phone unlocked by one of the websites that offer this service is easy. In the website you need to enter the IEMI code of your phone and you need to make your payment in order to get your phone unlocked in a few minutes. The website will modify the code and will inform you with an email. Afterwards you go to iTunes and restore your phone.

Irrespective of whether you have factory unlocked phones store facility or you get it done by an iPhone 4 unlock service you only need to get it done only once. There is no need to worry that your phone will get locked again. Since it is a case of modification of the IEMI code, anyone to do the modification again he has to access your IEMI number. Therefore, as long as you never disclose your IEMI code your phone cannot be locked again. The only need is that you must get your service from a reliable website.

Unlike when you get factory iPhone unlock service when you use an unlock i phone 4 service from a third party company, you need to choose a reputed one for a few reasons. One is the price. Since there is a number of companies that offer this service there are companies that provide their service at higher rates than others. Therefore, you need to source the services of a company that provide its service at a reasonable price. Another factor is that they should provide good customer service. If by chance your smart phone is not unlocked properly you need to seek the help of the customer service. This is where good customer service counts.

Only when you use an unlocked iPhone 4 you will enjoy the freedom your smart phone offers. You could use any SIM with it and you never need to be bound to one service provider. You will enjoy all the facilities offered by Apple with your unlocked phone also.

Irrespective of whether you buy a phone that has factory unlock iphonefeature or whether your phone is unlocked by an iPhone 4 unlock service, you will enjoy the freedom of being able to use any SIM card with your smart phone when you do so.
